Traveling when you have dietary restrictions can completely feel like you’re gonna be missing out all the good stuff, right? Food is such a big part of exploring a new city. I’ve been gluten-free for a few years now, and I’ve certainly had my share of sad salads, unexciting plates of grilled chicken, and those uncomfortable moments when they’re like, “sorry, we don’t have anything gluten-free.” When I was planning my trip to Montreal, I was really excited but a little nervous as well.
So, I’d heard all about how great the food in the city was—croissants, crêpes, poutine, and all that lovely sweet maple syrup—but I was completely not prepared for all those gluten-free goodies as well. Honestly, Montreal amazed me!
If you’re gluten-intolerant, have celiac disease, or just like skipping wheat, Montreal’s absolutely where to eat out. There are restaurants that provide all that Parisian feel without gluten, so I’m gonna reveal some of my favorite gluten-free goodies I found when I was there.
1. Le Marquis Sans Gluten: A Dream Realized for Desserts Enthusiasts
First, pastries, definitely. I mean, come on—if you can get your hands on a good gluten-free croissant, you’re essentially winning at life.
I stopped in at Le Marquis Sans Gluten in Old Montreal this morning, and, man, what a location! They have an all gluten-free selection, so you can relax while you browse all those beautiful golden, flaky pastries in the case.
Why you’ll love it:
- A completely gluten-free bakery located in the heart of Old Montreal!
- These flaky, buttery almond croissants are filled with this incredible sweet almond paste.
- Pain au chocolat and éclairs that rival traditional French bakeries
- Great store with really friendly people who completely understand dietary requirements.
- I couldn’t resist and took six pastries “for later”—they lasted less than two days!
Come hungry because you’re gonna take away a bag full of baked goodies!
2. Crêperie du Marché: The Buckwheat Delight at Jean-Talon
One of Montreal’s best qualities is that awesome food is easy to find, particularly at markets. Crêperie du Marché, which is a mere block from the entrance to Jean-Talon Market, soon became my go-to casual dining spot
They’re really into those French-style crepes that are, of course, gluten-free because they’re made from buckwheat flour. And sure enough, they entirely assure their batter is 100% secure.
Why you’ll love it:
- Naturally gluten-free buckwheat flour used in both sweet and savory crêpes
- Organic ingredients and friendly service
- Delicious options such as ham and cheese or spinach and mushrooms
- Sweet treats like maple syrup with chestnut cream that feel indulgent yet wholesome
- I’ve just received fresh ingredients from the nearby market!
If you’re going to Jean-Talon Market, you have to get a crêpe and then walk around the local produce stands afterward.
3. Cookie Stefanie: Sweet Treats without Gluten!
Downtown Montreal has lots of cafes and bakeries, but Cookie Stefanie is the best because it is completely gluten-free and absolutely delicious!
I dropped in after work today when it was raining, and man, I was completely hyped for all those cupcakes, brownies, cookies, and layer cakes. Seriously, their carrot cake is possibly the best I’ve ever tasted—gluten-free or otherwise!
Why you’ll love it:
- Dedicated gluten-free bakery with treats that don’t feel like compromise
- The brownies, cookies, muffins, and carrot cake are so moist and super delicious!
- Also offers vegan and nut-free items
- It has this relaxed feel, cute decorations, and great coffee options to pair your dessert.
- Great for ordering takeout or just relaxing after walking around downtown.
Your sweet tooth is going to love this!
4. Arepera: Venezuelan Flavors, Completely Gluten-Free
When you’re starving, you should try out Areperas in the Plateau. They have some great flavors that are completely gluten-free. They use corn flour for everything, so you can indulge in your comfort food without worrying about what goes into it.
Their arepas are completely loaded with goodness, and those sides made from plantains? I’d go back in there just for those alone!
Why you’ll love it:
- A completely gluten-free meal (yes, the entire meal!)
- Arepas filled with treats such as shredded beef, black beans, avocado, and cheese.
- The outside’s crunchy and the inside’s warm and soft—absolute heaven!
- Fried yuca fries and fried plantains are great sides!
- Cozy, vibrant atmosphere that feels like a hidden gem
Great for lunch or dinner when you’re craving a flavorful dish that’s really fast to prepare.
5. Krapow: Thai food that is gluten-free
Frankly, my biggest fear about being gluten-free is Asian food—i.e., soy sauce and sneaky wheat can throw everything off. That’s why I was so excited about discovering Krapow.
This small establishment is fully gluten-free and serves up some seriously delicious, authentic Thai flavors without restraint. Just be careful about how hot you like your food—it’s no joke!
Why you’ll love it:
- Fully gluten-free Thai restaurant
- Spicy basil chicken and Thai pad are absolutely full of flavor.
- Spice levels can be intense—ask for mild if you’re sensitive
- Small, cozy spot ideal for dinner with friends or solo dining
- Staff is knowledgeable and happy to explain the menu
Stop by for the pad Thai, and stay for the heat!
6. Poutineville: A Gluten-Free Version of a Classic Quebecois Dish
You can’t leave Montreal without trying poutine—but it’s a gluten nightmare in most places. Enter Poutineville, which offers a build-your-own experience with gluten-free gravy and fries.
This was one of the most satisfying meals of my trip. Gooey, cheesy, salty, crunchy—everything comfort food should be, minus the wheat.
Why you’ll love it:
- Gluten-free fries and gravy available—just ask when ordering
- So many options for toppings: vegetables, meats, cheeses, sauces!
- Build-your-own-poutine lets you control every ingredient
- Welcoming, laid-back environment
- What a great way to sample local food without compromising safety!
If you’re celiac or gluten-sensitive, this is your poutine paradise.
7. Sesame: A Cool Asian Side That’s Completely Gluten-Free
After visiting Notre-Dame Basilica, I stumbled upon Sesame, a stylish spot offering Asian-inspired dishes with clearly marked gluten-free options.
It’s not entirely gluten-free, but the staff is very concerned about allergies, and there are plenty of dishes that are safe to eat.
Why you’ll love it:
- The menu completely has gluten-free choices labeled clearly.
- Great stir-fry bowls, tofu dishes, and a few light noodle options!
- Great vibe, really cool place with relaxed music and incredible lighting.
- Excellent vegan and vegetarian options too
- Friendly staff willing to answer allergy-related questions
Great for a relaxed late lunch or a casual night when you’re exploring downtown.
8. Parc Sans Gluten: Everything About Gluten-Free Treats
It completely reminded me of being in Europe. Parc Sans Gluten is a 100% gluten-free bakery and coffeehouse, and they have a great assortment of pastries, sandwiches, and coffee drinks.
It’s the kind of place you could visit every day and still find something new to experiment with.

Great choice for breakfast or brunch from a relaxed, hip location.
9. Vegateau: A Casual Gathering Place for Vegans and Gluten-Free Enthusiasts
Vegan and gluten-free don’t exactly spell dessert heaven, but Vegateau turns that tale on its head.
All of these are completely vegan and gluten-free, and not just do they succeed, but they do it exceptionally well.
Why you’ll love it:
- I like vegan carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, man!
- I absolutely adore lemon bars, brownies, and cupcakes!
- Minimalist decor, relaxed atmosphere
- It’s smack in the middle of Mont-Royal, so it’s an ideal place to walk around afterward.
- What an awesome team that’s absolutely excited about their allergy-friendly treats!
A must-visit for anyone with multiple dietary restrictions—or anyone who loves dessert.
10. Jean-Talon and Atwater Markets: Bonus
Even if you’re dining out a lot, you’re wise to pick up a few gluten-free essentials for your hotel or vacation apartment. Montreal’s markets are completely the place for that.
These locations have a relaxed, local feel which is really fun and very useful as well.

Final Thoughts
Honestly, Montreal is simply a gluten-free food heaven! So, upon my arrival in Montreal, I was just hoping for a few good gluten-free meals. But I honestly found a city that truly understands how to keep dining out exciting, diverse, and inclusive for all!
Montreal has everything, man! You can now get that croissant from those bakeries along with some great ethnic food, good old Canadian comfort food, and lively markets. It’s not all about “gluten-free choices” here. This is one such location where I felt seen, cared for, and well-fed—and in all honesty, that doesn’t always happen when you have food restrictions!
If you’re just visiting for a long weekend or contemplating a full-fledged vacation, this town is a foodie’s paradise for those who are gluten-free.
Bon appétit—and happy discovering!
